Bytes, books and bridges: Philippines, China explore new connections in Guizhou

What happens when cutting-edge technology meets education, culture and diplomacy? New bridges of friendship emerge. Philippine Consul General Ivan Frank Olea and his delegation traveled to Guiyang for the 2026 China International Big Data Industry Expo, where more than 16,000 participants and 372 Chinese and international companies gathered to explore the future of data, artificial intelligence and digital innovation. But the visit went beyond technology. At Guizhou Minzu University, the Philippine delegation discussed academic cooperation, talent development, joint research, cultural exchanges and the preservation of intangible heritage—opening new possibilities for Filipino and Chinese students, educators, researchers and communities. From digital innovation to university partnerships, the visit demonstrated how the Philippines and China can create opportunities together, deepen mutual understanding and build stronger bonds of friendship between their peoples. The tools may be digital and the classrooms modern, but the goal is profoundly human: bringing two peoples closer, one connection at a time.
